With a few exceptions, birds are always on the move. When they fly, we naturally expect them to be in motion. And when they land, we tend to expect to see them at rest. But, a bird has endless chores. First and foremost after touching down, whether on branch or ground, birds must be on the lookout for predators. Birds must feed themselves. Since there is no bird grocery store, they must find and catch their next meal. And, birds must keep their flying mechanisms in top shape, which takes a lot of grooming.
Which brings me to my point. Today, as I walked the bayside trail, I saw this Marbled Godwit stop foraging for food and stretch his left wing and left leg. As I snapped the photo, I thought maybe I should add an exercise routine to the number of tasks birds have while on the ground. What do you think?
