The first time I saw it, the White-tailed Kite landed in a dead tree a quarter mile away. Through the camera lens, I saw the gray and white raptor. The only thing I knew to do was to get the best photo I could and to worry about identification later. This would be special. I would soon find out the White-tailed Kite had carried a small rodent to the lofty perch.
The high observation platform had a sturdy, protective railing all the way around. I placed my elbows on a couple of spots nearly clear of bird poop and held the camera to my eye. I knew I pushed the digital camera’s capabilities. The obliging bird sat still on its high branch. After a few takes, I left the platform and slowly, with eyes averted, walked up the trail. The point nearest the tree cut the distance in half. Fervently, I wished my tripod did not wait in the car.
Carefully and slowly, I raised the camera to my eye, removed the lens cap and focused. That’s when I saw the White-tailed Kite had carried a small rodent to the lofty perch. A few shots later, I left the area so the hungry bird could feel comfortable enough to eat its lunch.
