Although I’ve seen raptors dip talons into the water to catch a fish, I’ve never seen the bird entirely submerge itself. But, this one did and when it emerged it brought up a prize – a steelhead.

We were only a quarter mile into our walk when the amazing event occurred. The osprey landed on an old dock piling and began to consume its prize catch. While the mid-sized raptor devoured the fish, its feathers dried in the morning sun. In a short while, a passing crow checked in to inquire if there would be a tidbit left over. The osprey’s answer was a definite, “No.” Implied by a silent raptor glare, of course.

I’ll never forget the morning an osprey dove into the bay and emerged with a steelhead.
