When a Hawk takes flight, it is well worth watching. So, on every walk, I scan the trees for that easily identifiable outline of a Raptor. Maybe today will be my lucky day.
It was early morning. The fog lifted and the sun poked its face above the Coast Range as I walked along the Bayfront trail. Other than a Harrier gliding low over the marshy grass, there wasn’t much going on. And then, walking through deep shade of an alder grove, I saw it. A Red-shouldered Hawk rested on a bare, sunlit branch about a hundred feet up the trail. I knew it would fly when it saw me.
Before I emerged into the light, I stopped, unpacked my camera and got ready. I took in a deep breath as I stepped out into the sunlight. Advancing in careful, measured steps, I took slow, deep breaths as I worked my way closer to my target. When I saw the Hawk move slightly, I stopped and put camera to eye. A couple of lucky clicks and then the Red-shouldered Hawk was gone out of sight.
Yes, it bears repeating: When a Hawk takes flight, it is well worth watching.
