The relative newness of digital photography continues to demand we push camera capabilities to the max. On an island a quarter mile off shore, this Great Blue Heron stood by a pond, preoccupied with catching lunch. The only camera I brought that day was my old Nikon Coolpix.
As I watched the Heron, I felt in my bones something interesting was about to happen. I signaled to my little dog Ellie to stay close and still. She hovered at my ankle.
The north wind was bity and cold. I extended my lens as far as it would go, put my eye to the viewfinder, held my breath and waited. The great bird stabbed its beak into the water and brought up a fish. The bird was very quick. At the very moment the fish was swallowed, I pressed the shutter release. And at that moment, the north wind blew the feathers of the south facing bird. My tiny pocket camera recorded the astonishing result. The rest is history.
When we critique the results, we could say the subject was much too distant to photograph well. However, I say too few pixels for such a long distance produced an extraordinary result. The “painterly” photo of the bird in its special situation helped make the story. I’m happy with it. And I hope you like it.
