Once I asked an old-time fisherman where to go to catch fish.
He answered, “Go to where you last caught fish.” Since I wanted coordinants, I discounted the old sage’s words and muddled my way through. Now that I watch birds and animals, those words have come back as fresh information.
After all this time, I finally realize we all are creatures of habit. There is a finite number of nearby walking trails, and I visit the same places on a regular basis. Walking gives me time to think about what I see where, and I have begun to expect to see certain birds and animals in certain locations. Like the Great Blue I see down by the docks, and a Great Egret that fishes the same stream at nearly predictable times, and the Snowy Egrets that fish regularly in Long Pond. I’ve come to realize they are fishing where they last caught fish.
So it is with this Great Blue Heron. It likes the old marina when certain times of the tide correspond with certain times of day. It is a creature of habit that goes to where it last caught fish.
